Last month I posted articles about Oy Oy Oy Gevalt! Jews and Punk in Jewniverse and The Algemeiner, and there’s been more to share since then!
Reviews by Amos Lassen noted, “I am one hundred percent certain that there are very few, if any, who would think of punk and Judaism in the same sentence. At least so I thought until I read Michael Croland’s book. … I had no idea how many different bands and variations there are and I found it especially interesting to read about the backgrounds, motivations, and influences of the artists throughout the book.”
The Jewish Telegraph interviewed me and wrote about the book in an article titled “Punk Use of Swastika Was a ‘Shock Tactic.'”
JTA covered the new documentary Danny Says, which is about Danny Fields, the Ramones’ manager. The article said, “As Michael Croland, author of ‘Oy Oy Oy Gevalt! Jews and Punk,’ points out, the [Ramones] also consciously toyed with Nazi themes and imagery, as evidenced in songs like ‘Blitzkrieg Bop’ and ‘Commando.'”
I’ve written three articles about bands in the book for Jewcy this month. Trans Tishrei: A Little Schmekel for the Holidays looked at Schmekel’s songs about Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Sukkot, and Simchat Torah. The Shondes Shine Bright on ‘Brighton’ was a review of the Shondes’ new album. Going to Dozens of Jewish Punk Shows explored why I keep going to see Golem and Moshiach Oi! over and over again.
